How much do you need to earn to get car finance in NZ?
To apply with Kiwi Car Finance you need $500 or more a week coming in. Lenders must check repayments are affordable, so they look at steady income going into your bank account against your regular costs.

Income that counts
- Wages or salary, full-time or part-time.
- Casual or seasonal work, shown in bank statements.
- Self-employed or sole trader income.
- Other regular income paid into your account.
Why there is a minimum
A car loan has to leave enough for rent, food, fuel and bills. Below about $500 a week, there is rarely room for repayments once those costs are covered, so lenders are unlikely to go ahead.
What if I am on Jobseeker Support?
Jobseeker Support on its own is usually under $500 a week, so applying is unlikely to be the right fit yet. If you also have part-time work or other income that brings you to $500 or more a week, you can apply.
How income is checked
Recent payslips, or three months of bank statements if your work is casual or self-employed. Lending criteria apply.
