Can you get car finance in NZ with credit issues?
Yes, you can apply. A default or missed payments do not automatically rule you out. Lenders look at your whole situation: your income, your regular costs, how you have handled credit recently, and whether repayments fit your budget.

What lenders look at
Under the Credit Contracts and Consumer Finance Act (CCCFA), lenders in New Zealand must make reasonable inquiries to check that a loan is suitable and affordable for you. That means your income and expenses matter as much as your credit history.
- Income: regular money coming in. We ask for $500 or more a week.
- Spending: rent, bills and other loans, usually from bank statements.
- Recent credit history: how you have handled bills and credit lately.
Check your credit report first
In New Zealand you can ask Centrix, Equifax and illion for a free copy of your credit report. Check it for mistakes, such as a debt you already paid that still shows as owing. Defaults generally stay on your file for five years.
What helps your application
- Steady income going into your bank account.
- Bank statements that match what you tell the lender.
- Being upfront about past credit problems.
- Choosing a car and loan amount that fit your budget.
Lending criteria apply and the lender makes every decision.
