How car finance works in New Zealand
A car loan lets you buy a car now and repay it over a set term. In New Zealand, lenders must check the loan is affordable under the CCCFA, then offer a rate and term based on your situation. Kiwi Car Finance is a referral service, not a lender.

The steps
- You apply with your details, licence and income.
- The lender checks affordability and your credit history.
- If they can help, they explain the loan amount, rate, term and fees.
- You decide whether to go ahead, then buy the car.
What affects the rate
Your credit history, the loan amount and term, the age of the car and whether you put money down. Each lender sets its own rates and fees.
Read the contract
Before you sign, check the total amount you will repay, all fees, and what happens if you miss a payment. Ask questions if anything is unclear.
Where we fit
We pass your application to our finance partner and its finance providers. They assess it and make every decision. Lending criteria apply.
